Wigton Motor Club had a very busy April, including a first for the club when they ran two very different events on the same day, around fifty miles apart, on Sunday 19 April.

The Spring Autosolo took place at Maryport and attracted an oversubscribed entry, showing the continued popularity of this accessible and competitive form of motorsport. Autosolos focus on precise car control around a flowing course marked by cones, with competitors timed against the clock.

Meanwhile, in Westmorland, 42 crews started the Roof of England Tour. The 140-mile route took crews through some of the highest parts of the Pennines before finishing in Alston, England’s highest market town. Superb spring weather added to the day, giving crews the chance to enjoy the scenery as well as the driving.

The busy schedule continued on Sunday 26 April with Wigton Motor Club’s Drive It Day gathering at Dalemain, near Penrith. The event attracted more than 200 cars from across the North, with vehicles ranging in age from 1923 to 2010. Owners were asked to make a £5 donation per car, raising £1,000 for the club’s chosen charities, Sunbeams Music Trust near Penrith and the Freedom Project in West Cumbria.

There is no let-up in May, with Wigton Motor Club’s calendar continuing with the John Peel Meander on Wednesday 6 May. The event is aimed at pre-World War Two cars, although similar cars up to the early 1950s are also welcomed. The relaxed 45-mile run starts at the Motor House at Moota and finishes at Base Camp, Cocklakes.

The club’s May programme also includes Cars and Coffee at the Motor House on Sunday 10 May and another Autosolo on Sunday 17 May, continuing an active start to the season for one of ANECCC’s busiest member clubs.
